Sailfish Splash Waterpark

Project Type:
Competition, Education and Training
Location:
Stuart, Florida

The Sailfish Splash Waterpark––located in Stuart, Florida––and the Martin County Parks District shifted gears from their original desire to replace the deteriorating Martin County High School pool to building a new multi-purpose, world-class aquatic complex. The aquatic complex concept was developed from the idea that a recreational splash waterpark could fund the operations of a competitive swimming venue. Additional support for the aquatic complex came from a county-wide parks and recreation department master plan and subsequent feasibility study.

Based on discussion with the owner and key stakeholders, and after assessing the needs and requirements of Martin County, WTI was hired in 2008. Alongside the architect, WTI evaluated site location options, determined the final site location, developed a comprehensive program of aquatic needs and requirements and produced conceptual designs. WTI also completed a master plan for the aquatic site for future developments. Once this phase was completed and approved, WTI moved into schematic design and design criteria documents, detailing drawings for construction phases.

The facility opened in April 2012 with overwhelming support from community members, who collectively purchased more than 10,000 season passes. Additionally, the new waterpark helped create more than 130 seasonal jobs. On track to accomplish the aim of supporting its competitive components, the new waterpark topped $1 million in revenue in July 2012.
