Sar-Ko-Par Aquatic Center

Project Type:
Community Recreation
Location:
Lenexa, KS

The Indian Trails Aquatic Center at Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park was originally built in 1976 and has been widely favored by the community since. In 1996, Water Technology, Inc. (WTI) was engaged in the first set of renovations. Nearly 3 decades later, in 2021, WTI was hired alongside the prime architect to enhance and modernize the aquatic amenities to protect the future of Lenexa’s aquatic investment.

The facility was renamed Sar-Ko-Par Aquatic Center and was designed with community input, global market demands, and operational requirements in mind. The aquatic center creates optimum programming opportunities with ample open water and attractive amenities while preserving the historical aspects of the park and enhancing the overall user appeal.

The design is comprised of two pools with a multi-generational appeal that can accommodate multi-faceted programs such as learn to swim, recreational swim and dive teams, water fitness activities, aquatic events, and party rentals. The two pools are to co-exist in the same operational environment which will have energy-saving benefits and allows each pool to operate independently without impacting the operation of the other facility components.

The multi-use lifestyle pool consists of a zero-depth entry with a passive play area and an active spray play zone that links the shallow water to the current channel and presents recreational and wellness opportunities for all age ranges.

The 8-lane, 25-meter competition pool is intended for water aerobics, competition and training, recreation, lap swimming, diving, deep water activities, and learn to swim. It also features a 30-foot tall slide tower that terminates into the plunge pool area. Ample shade and deck space are available creating an elevated guest experience.

Groundbreaking for the $15M renovation began in 2023. The park celebrated the second renovation & design grand opening on Memorial Weekend, 2024.
