Sayreville Center for Lifelong Learning

Project Type:
Competition, Education and Training
Location:
Sayreville, New Jersey

The Sayreville Center for Lifelong Learning serves students with autism, children and young adults with severe disabilities and preschool-aged children with disabilities. The new, 89,000-square-foot school and community center (which is open to the public during non-school hours) opened in 2009.

The Center for Lifelong Learning is committed to being environmentally responsible and optimizes energy performance through renewable resources and water and energy consumption. Once complete, the center was ranked 18th among the top-20 greenest schools in the nation by the US. Environmental Protection Agency in October 2009; it also ranked second in the same category in the state of New Jersey. In 2011, the school and community center achieved LEED Platinum certification.

In order to meet LEED requirements, the aquatics area uses UV technology, regenerative media filters and pool covers. The aquatics facility features two pools: A competition pool and a leisure pool with zero depth entry and current channel. Both are ADA compliant and temperature controlled.

The WTI design team worked closely with the architect to meet the unique needs of the school. The pools were designed to meet not only a multi-generational user group, but also the needs of the students at the school. Natural lighting was used throughout the facility to enhance the serene environment and to cut down on harsh lighting that can create challenges for some students. Interactive play equipment was integrated within the leisure pool design to increase stimulation and development skills among students. These features include geysers, basketball hoops and an aquadome.

The leisure pool also features a current channel, which students and community members can use for therapy, resistance walking or exercise. Underwater benches with therapeutic jets are also located in the leisure pool. The area also includes a 6-lane-by-25-yard competition pool designed for lap swimming and swim meets, plus a sitting area for spectators.
