Rain couldn’t keep die-hard swimmers away for the Grand Opening of the KandlePark Pool in Tacoma, Washington. Area residents lined up thirty minutes before doors opened to be the first to experience the new wave pool, the first of its kind in the Tacoma area. WTI, alongside architect SHKS Architects, provided design for the wave pool, bubble pool, and spray pad. The pool was part of a 2009 master plan and includes expansion options for a future lazy river and slides when funds become available. Additional improvements throughout the park included irrigation, extensive landscaping, new play equipment, and additional parking.
Funds for the project came from a 2005 voter approved park improvement bond and a Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office Land, Water and Conservation grant. The team designed the facility based on the opinions of community members, of all ages and wants, through a design workshop. The Girls and Boys Club were also surveyed to provide input on the types of amenities they would like to see at the new pool. Once all the information was gathered, WTI worked closely with the architect to prioritize the community’s goals and objectives and provide programming assistance for the pool. The new pool has something for everyone, including four lap lanes for the recreational swimmer, interactive elements for the young and young at heart, and bubble pool for those looking to relax and engage in conversations.
