Montrose Recreation Center

Project Type:
Community Recreation
Location:
Montrose, Colorado

60 miles south of Grand Junction on the Western Slope of Colorado lies the City of Montrose. In April of 2014, the City of Montrose voters approved a sales and use tax increase for the construction and renovation of the Community Recreation Center. Together with the architect, WTI focused solely on the identified opportunity for the addition of aquatics in the facility. This innovative project combines the best of water by including a competition pool, a wellness pool, and a leisure pool. Fun elements like spray features, WiBit play structures, and slack lines will make this facility entertaining for users of all ages, for many years to come.

The wellness pool operates between 90-92 degrees Fahrenheit and is appropriate for wellness classes, learn-to-swim, and aquatic therapy. The mounted exercise rails and hydrotherapy bench seating are ideal for athletes, seniors, and the whole family.

The 25-yard x 25-meter competition pool with starting platforms and can be positioned to allow eleven 25-yard competition lanes or six 25-meter competition lanes. The floatable bridge system (by WiBit) provides various programming opportunities outside of standard lap swimming for children of all ages. The 22-foot-tall slide tower has an enclosed body flume slide that exits the building making several back-and-forth loops before re-entering the building and ending in a run-out. This is sure to provide thrills! A second slide flume with a run-out has been designed for a future addition. The current channel will be perfect for users of all ages with its vortex area and social bench seating.

Whether for recreation use or resistance walking, the current channel provides opportunities to spread out swimmers from the leisure pool with a beach entry and several spray features and play structure.
