University of Southern Indiana
The University of Southern Indiana has longed for its very own swim and dive teams and the ability to offer premier swimming and diving programs. The original campus pool did not meet standards to compete. The Board of Trustees approved a three-phase project that included a brand-new athletic arena--- Screaming Eagles Arena in Phase I and an addition of a natatorium, basketball arena, and renovations on their existing Physical Activities Center (PAC) in Phase II. Phase II commenced following the opening of the new arena in April 2019. Water Technology, Inc. (WTI) provided aquatic planning, design, and engineering for the new 25,000 SF natatorium that would replace the old campus pool.
The natatorium is positioned below ground level with upper-deck windows enabling a birds’ eye view of activities in the pool. It features an 8-lane, 25-meter by 25-yard competition pool with two warm up and cool down lanes and a diving well.
The new facility, home to the USI Swimming and Diving teams, is capable of hosting duel and regional meets. It will be available for a period of time each day during the week for public swim and high school swim use.
A ceremony was held in September of 2021 to unveil the new $65.5 Million athletic complex. As of Fall 2022, swimming and diving programs were in full swing.
“Swimming and diving is an integral part of youth sports in the state of Indiana and a program we have been hoping to offer for some time now,” said Jon Mark Hall, USI Athletic Director. “Our new Aquatics Center will be a perfect home for these new programs, and we can’t wait for the USI community to experience it both by attending meets and taking advantage of the pool themselves.”
