Williston ARC

Project Type:
Community Recreation
Location:
Williston, North Dakota

The Williston Area Recreation Center (ARC) is designed to serve the community of Williston, ND, where the population continues to grow at a tremendous rate due to the region's oil boom. The recreation center is built on the campus of Williston State College using a joint powers agreement and an operational agreement with the college, the park district and the Board of Higher Education of North Dakota.

WTI and the architect conducted a series of meetings to develop a program that would best fit the current and future needs of the community. The new facility is designed to world-class standards and offers something for all ages and abilities. The aquatic area includes a 53-meter competition pool, a 25-yard warm-up pool, a leisure pool, a lazy river, a FlowRider, a whirlpool and body slides that empty into a plunge pool. The competition pool is designed to accommodate large USA Swimming and high school events. The leisure pool theming draws from the area's rich mining industry and includes an oil boom play feature.

Additional areas of the recreation center include a gymnasium space, community space, indoor playground, birthday party rooms, fitness areas, office space, an indoor turf field, tennis courts and racquetball courts. The facility is financed through a one percent sales tax for the Williston Parks and Recreation Department. Half of the funds were used to pay the revenue bond for the construction of this project.
