City of Austin/YMCA North Austin Community Recreation Center
The City of Austin/YMCA North Austin Community Recreation Center was the direct result of a 2006 bond election for a new community center. Together with the architect, WTI was hired to perform the planning and design of the aquatic center.
Sequentially, in 2010, the city partnered with the YMCA to operate the new civic facility that would promote the YMCA's core values: youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
In time for the New Year's resolution rush, the new, 36,000-square-foot facility celebrated its grand opening, featuring health and wellness programs, open-access community spaces, a child watch center, gymnasium, indoor pools, and a site for future community gardens. The YMCA is designed to achieve LEED Silver certification, incorporating many conservation and energy saving strategies throughout the facility, including the aquatics area.
