After years of planning and collaboration, the City of Muncie proudly opened a state-ofthe-
art YMCA facility in March 2025, marking a transformative investment in community
wellness, recreation, and neighborhood revitalization. Located near Muncie Central High
School, the facility anchors the McKinley-Whitely Live Learn Neighborhood initiative and
replaces the aging Northwest YMCA. The $31 million project was made possible through
a mix of public and private funding, including $1 million in READI support.
WTI worked alongside the prime architect, providing aquatic design and engineering
services to create an innovative facility which features an innovative facility, serving
both competitive and leisure aquatic programming. The 4,355-square-foot competition
pool includes eight 25-yard lanes with starting platforms and two 1-meter diving
boards—providing a dedicated space for Muncie Central’s swim team, regional meets,
and year-round training. The 1,819-square-foot wellness pool offers more programming
experiences: the zero-depth entry creates a dedicated play space for little ones, featuring
interactive spray and play feature, ramping to deeper waters, complete with a volleyball
net, basketball hoop, and open water for training and water aerobics, ideal for family
recreation and aquatic fitness.
Beyond aquatics, the center includes a sauna, gymnasium, health clinic, and flexible
community spaces. Since opening, YMCA membership has tripled, reflecting the facility’s
broad appeal across age groups and interests.
The new YMCA offers year-round aquatic access, youth development programs, health
services, and inclusive design features. It also supports job creation and economic growth
while providing a safe, welcoming space for community gatherings. The Muncie YMCA
stands as a vibrant, future-focused hub for connection, enrichment, and lifelong wellness.
